Egyptian Soldiers Killed In Sinai Attack

At least 12 members of Egypt’s security forces have been killed in an attack by gunmen from the so-called Islamic State in the Sinai region, the Reuters news agency reports quoting medical and security sources.

The attack took place 40 km (25 miles) away from the town of Bir al-Abd, making it the first major attack in the central Sinai area, which had so far escaped a campaign of Islamist attacks, the report says.

Sources told Reuters that assault rifles and some heavier weapons were used in the attack.

The wounded were taken to hospital in the northern city of el-Arish.
