Man, 42, Jailed For Alleged Conspiracy And Cheating

Benjamin Daniel, 42, was yesterday brought before a Gudu Upper Area Court in Abuja, charged with alleged criminal conspiracy and cheating.

The prosecutor, Fidelix Ogbubwe, told the court that one Stanley Okeke of Area 7, Garki, Abuja reported the matter at the Garki Police Station, Abuja on April 14.

He said while the plaintiff was walking along the UTC road at Area 10, Garki, the defendant deceitfully approached him with pretence of conducting prayers for him.

Ogbuwe said that in the process of the prayers, Daniel requested Okeke to hand over his cell phone, valued at N16,000 and N5,000 to Daniel’s accomplice, now at large.

He said that Daniel told Okeke to count seven poles on the road during which Daniel and his accomplice fled with Daniel’s phone and money.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene sections 97 and 322 of the Penal Code.

Daniel, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, granted him bail in the sum of N50, 000.

The accused is also to produce a surety, who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

Kagarko adjourned the case to June 1 for hearing.
